Who needs a Schengen visa in the US?
Whether you need a Schengen visa depends on your nationality, not on where you live. US citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, but a green card holder or work visa holder with a passport from a country on the EU visa list needs a short-stay visa, as the European Commission explains. Your US residence decides where you apply: as a general rule, at the consulate responsible for where you legally live.

How to apply for a Schengen visa from the USA
- Choose the right country: the one where you will spend the most nights.
- Find the consulate that covers your US state and read its own checklist.
- Book an appointment with the consulate or its visa center, such as VFS Global or BLS International.
- Collect your documents with the checklist above and buy travel insurance.
- Attend the appointment, give your fingerprints and pay the fee.
- Wait about 15 days for a decision, and do not buy non-refundable tickets until the visa is issued.
Common mistakes
- Applying to the wrong country. A trip with 4 nights in Paris and 6 in Rome goes through Italy, not France.
- Bank statements that raise questions. A large deposit just before applying looks like borrowed money. Steady balances work better.
- Insurance that does not cover every Schengen country or every day of the trip.
- Applying too late. Summer appointments fill up weeks ahead, so book as soon as your dates are firm.
- Passport problems. Your passport must be valid 3 months after you leave. Check it with our passport validity checker, and plan your days with the Schengen calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Do US green card holders need a Schengen visa?
It depends on the passport you hold. A US green card does not exempt anyone from the Schengen visa requirement. If your passport is from a country on the EU visa list, such as India, China or Nigeria, you need a Schengen visa even with a green card. If your passport is from a visa-free country, you do not.
How much is a Schengen visa from the USA?
The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, and children under 6 pay nothing, under Regulation (EU) 2024/1415 in force since June 11, 2024. Visa centers such as VFS Global or BLS International add their own service fee, which varies by country.
How long does a Schengen visa take?
Consulates normally decide within 15 days of your appointment. In individual cases it can take up to 45 days. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip and no later than 15 days before, so apply early, especially for summer travel.
What is the Schengen visa application form?
It is the standard EU application for a short-stay visa. Many countries now use online forms, such as France-Visas, that you complete, print and sign. Others still use a PDF form from the consulate. Each traveler, including each child, needs their own signed form.
