As of 28 October 2026, most universities in Europe with a February 2027 intake have closed to students who need a visa, and a few close this week (NCI, DCU, Maynooth and Galway on 31 October; VU Amsterdam and TU Dublin on 1 November). Germany's April 2027 summer semester (deadline usually 15 January 2027) is still open, and so are some Irish colleges with January 2027 starts. Sweden, Finland and most Dutch programmes have closed for early 2027.

If you are a US citizen, or any non-EU student hoping to start a degree in early 2027, this guide gives you a deadline table checked on 28 October 2026, visa timing worked backwards from each start date, and a backup plan if you miss out. Your nationality changes some deadlines, so read the US passport section if it applies to you. Rules change often, so confirm your own case on the university and embassy pages or with a qualified adviser.

If you hold a US passport: which deadlines apply to you?

US citizens often have more time than the "visa-required" dates suggest. In Ireland and Germany, Americans do not need a visa before travel, so some options that look closed are still open for them.

Ireland

US citizens do not need an Irish entry visa, so you use the non-visa deadline. At National College of Ireland, that is 30 November 2026 for a January 2027 start (National College of Ireland). You still need to register with immigration after you arrive. At registration you must show access to €10,000 for a one-year course (€833 a month for stays of 6 to 8 months), plus proof of fees paid and health insurance. Registration costs €300 (Immigration Service Delivery). For other Irish colleges, ask admissions which date applies to applicants who do not need a visa.

Germany

According to the US Embassy in Germany and German Missions in the USA, US citizens can enter Germany visa-free and apply for the student residence permit at the local foreigners office (Ausländerbehörde) within 90 days. Confirm this on the German Missions in the USA study visa page before you book flights. Proof of funds, usually the blocked account, is still required, but the embassy appointment wait described below does not apply to you.

Your days before the permit count toward your visa-free stay, so check your dates with our Schengen 90/180 calculator. ETIAS is not yet in operation and has no confirmed launch date (it is now expected in 2027), so no action is needed for now. Check travel-europe.europa.eu/etias before you fly.

Netherlands, Sweden and Finland

US citizens still need a residence permit for study in these three countries, arranged through the university or the national migration agency. US citizens don't need an MVV entry visa for the Netherlands, so ask VU whether a later non-visa deadline applies to you. Sweden's second spring round excludes anyone who needs a residence permit, and that includes Americans.

Is the Germany summer semester 2027 still open?

Yes. As of 28 October 2026, Germany's summer semester 2027 is still open at most universities, with a usual deadline of 15 January 2027 for an April 2027 start. Germany has no February intake: the summer semester is the spring option, and lectures usually begin in April (Technical University of Munich).

The summer semester 2027 Germany deadline is not the date to aim for

uni-assist is a processing service with no deadline of its own. It follows each university's date, but it advises applying at least eight weeks before the university deadline so you can still add missing documents. For a 15 January 2027 deadline, that means about 20 November 2026 (YourWeg).

The same guide says processing takes 4 to 6 weeks normally and up to 8 weeks at peak, which runs from November to January. That is exactly when you will be applying.

Many German programmes close earlier than 15 January

Not every German university uses 15 January. Examples from the 2027 cycle:

  • RWTH Aachen's open-admission Master's programmes closed on 1 September 2026 (Maven Consulting Services).
  • TUM's Physics Master's window runs 1 September to 30 November 2026 (Maven Consulting Services).
  • Stuttgart's German-taught Master's window is 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027, so it has not opened yet (Maven Consulting Services).
  • Osnabrück University sets its uni-assist deadline for the summer semester at 15 December, a month earlier than usual (Osnabrück University).

APS and money

APS is required if your qualifications come from China, Vietnam or India (it depends on where you studied, not your passport); US applicants do not need one. Check uni-assist's APS guidance and the APS office for your country. Third-party guides put the full German student visa process (documents, APS where required, appointment wait and decision) at about 3 to 6 months (Study-abroad.org).

The same guide gives the blocked-account requirement as €11,904 per year (€992 a month) and the visa fee as €75. Confirm the current figure with your embassy. Our Germany student visa application checklist lists the documents you will need.

Are Netherlands February 2027 intake deadlines already closed?

Mostly yes. As of 28 October 2026, the February 2027 intake in the Netherlands is closed at many universities for non-EU students, and VU Amsterdam closes on 1 November 2026 for those needing a visa. Many Dutch programmes do not offer a February start at all.

The University of Groningen's Studielink deadline for February 2027, for applicants with non-Dutch qualifications, was 15 October 2026 (University of Groningen). Some programmes have different deadlines, and one agency guide lists 1 October for Groningen and Eindhoven, so check the programme page.

At VU Amsterdam, the February 2027 deadline for non-EU students who need a visa is 1 November 2026, and the visa application must be started before 1 December 2026 (VU Amsterdam). VU also warns that February starters begin with semester 2 and continue with semester 1 in September, which makes study planning difficult. If your documents are not ready, September 2027 is the more realistic target.

Is it too late to apply to Sweden or Finland for spring 2027?

Yes. As of 28 October 2026, Sweden and Finland are effectively closed for non-EU students wanting to start in January or February 2027. Both have autumn 2027 rounds closing in January 2027, and those are your backup.

Sweden spring 2027: closed

Sweden's first admissions round for spring 2027 closed on 17 August 2026, with documents due 1 September and Master's results released on 7 October (University Admissions Sweden). The second spring round closed on 15 October 2026, and the official site says non-EU/EEA students who need a residence permit will not have time to get one in this round.

Sweden's first round for autumn 2027 opened on 16 October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027 at midnight CET. Documents and the fee are due 1 February 2027, with Master's results on 1 April and Bachelor's results on 8 April 2027 (Stockholm University).

Finland January 2027: closed, next window 7 to 21 January 2027

Finland's joint application for English-taught programmes starting in January 2027 ran 31 August to 10 September 2026 and is closed, with results due by 19 November 2026 (StudyU).

The official Studyinfo portal confirms the next English-taught joint application runs 7 January (08:00) to 21 January 2027 (15:00 Finnish time), with up to six programmes on one form (Studyinfo). That round is for autumn 2027. Applicants from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland pay a €100 application fee (JAMK University of Applied Sciences).

Ireland's January 2027 intake: which colleges are still open?

A few Irish institutions are still open for January 2027 as of 28 October 2026. Most deadlines for visa-required students fall between 31 October and early December 2026, and students who do not need a visa, including US citizens, often have later dates.

National College of Ireland's January 2027 deadline is 31 October 2026 for students who need an Irish entry visa, 30 November 2026 for students who do not, and 11 January 2027 for students already living in Ireland. NCI adds that applicants from some countries may face earlier deadlines because of visa processing times (National College of Ireland).

One agency guide lists DCU, Maynooth and University of Galway closing on 31 October, TU Dublin on 1 November, Griffith College, DBS and NCI on 30 November, and UCD as rolling with an apply-by date of 4 December 2026 (Leap Scholar). Its NCI date is the deadline for students who do not need a visa, and sources disagree on Griffith, so confirm dates with each college.

The same guide says Trinity and UCC do not run a January intake for taught programmes. If you need a visa and cannot submit by 31 October, UCD may be your most realistic Irish option. See our Ireland student visa application checklist before you apply.

Student visa timeline for February 2027 intake: how long does each country take?

For a February or April 2027 start, apply for your student visa as early as each country allows. Germany issues visas no earlier than 3 months before arrival, Ireland lets you apply up to 3 months before travel, and Finland's Migri makes 82% of positive first student permit decisions within 30 days.

Country Earliest you can apply or be issued Typical decision time Proof of funds and fees
Germany Visa issued only within 3 months of arrival About 4 weeks minimum (Dhaka), 3 to 4 weeks at other missions; 3 to 6 months end to end €11,904 blocked account; €75 visa fee
Ireland Apply up to 3 months before travel About 4 to 8 weeks (third-party guides) €10,000 for a one-year course (checked in the visa application, or at registration if no visa is needed)
Finland Apply online in Enter Finland after admission 82% of positive first decisions within 30 days; 90 days estimated for the rest €9,600 in your own account; permit €600 online, €750 on paper
Netherlands (VU) Visa application must be started before 1 December 2026 for February 2027 Check your university Check your university

Germany

The German Embassy in Dhaka says the minimum student visa processing time is about 4 weeks, and the visa can only be issued within 3 months of arrival (German Embassy Dhaka). In high-demand countries such as India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh, appointment slots can fill 4 to 12 weeks ahead (Study-abroad.org). Check your own German embassy page.

Ireland

Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery says to apply for a long-term study visa up to 3 months before your travel date, from your home country or country of legal residence. The Dublin Visa Office publishes decisions and waiting times every Tuesday (Immigration Service Delivery). Third-party estimates range from 2 to 8 weeks, so use the weekly table.

Finland

Finland has no separate student visa. You apply online in Enter Finland, then prove your identity at a Finnish mission. The permit costs €600 online (€750 on paper) and needs €9,600 in your own account for studies of a year or more (StudyU). Migri processes all student applications as urgent, and about 1,093 first student applications were in the queue on 9 September 2026 (Finnish Immigration Service).

Worked example: counting back from an April 2027 start in Germany

Say you plan to arrive in Germany on 1 April 2027 and you apply from a country where visa appointments fill up to 12 weeks ahead.

  1. Earliest visa issue date: 3 months before arrival is 1 January 2027.
  2. Latest appointment date: with a minimum of about 4 weeks for a decision, your appointment must happen by about 4 March 2027.
  3. Booking the appointment: if slots fill 4 to 12 weeks ahead, book between about 10 December 2026 and 4 February 2027.
  4. University application: submit to uni-assist by about 20 November 2026 so missing documents can be added before the 15 January 2027 deadline.

Many German missions ask for your admission letter at the appointment; check your mission's checklist. If your letter may arrive late, apply to programmes with earlier deadlines, check whether your mission accepts a conditional admission or proof of application, or plan for the winter semester.

Worked example: Ireland January 2027

If you need a visa and your course starts in late January 2027, allowing the upper estimate of 8 weeks means submitting your visa application by late November. You need an offer letter and fee payment first, so an application sent on 31 October only works if the college decides quickly. Ask the admissions office for its current decision time before you apply. Also make sure your passport has enough validity left with our passport validity checker.

What to do if you missed the February 2027 intake deadline in Europe

If you missed the February 2027 deadlines, your best options are Germany's summer semester or the September 2027 intake, where several major deadlines are only weeks or months away.

  1. Check Germany first. If your programme uses 15 January 2027, get your uni-assist file in early.
  2. Apply to Sweden for autumn 2027. The round is open and closes 15 January 2027 at midnight CET.
  3. Prepare for Finland's January window. The English-taught joint application runs 7 to 21 January 2027 for autumn 2027 entry.
  4. Target the Netherlands for September 2027. Numerus fixus programmes such as Medicine and Dentistry close on 15 January 2027 via Studielink, and non-EU master's deadlines are commonly 1 April, with VU Amsterdam listing 1 April 2027 (Leap Scholar).
  5. Look at Irish September 2027 intakes if Trinity or UCC were your first choice.

Common mistakes with spring 2027 intakes

Most problems come from trusting one general deadline list instead of the programme page. These mistakes can cost you a whole year:

  • Treating 15 January as Germany's universal deadline. Several programmes close weeks earlier.
  • Thinking Finland's January application is for a spring start. The 7 to 21 January 2027 window is for autumn 2027.
  • Applying in Sweden's second round when you need a residence permit. The official site says there is no time to get one.
  • Arriving in Ireland without the registration funds. Non-visa students, including Americans, must show access to €10,000 for a one-year course when they register.
  • Waiting to book the visa appointment until admission arrives, in countries where slots fill 12 weeks ahead. Check your mission's rules on what you can bring if the letter is not yet issued.

Frequently asked questions

Which European universities still accept applications for February 2027?

As of 28 October 2026, the main options are German universities for the April 2027 summer semester (usually a 15 January 2027 deadline, with uni-assist files ideally sent by 20 November 2026) and UCD in Ireland, which runs rolling admissions (apply by about 4 December 2026). US citizens can apply to NCI until 30 November 2026. Sweden, Finland and Groningen have closed.

Does Germany have a February or January intake?

No. Germany has a winter semester and a summer semester, and the summer semester is the spring option, with lectures usually starting in April. For an April 2027 start, the usual deadline is 15 January 2027, but some programmes close earlier, so always check the programme page.

Do I need a blocked account before I apply to a German university?

The blocked account is a visa or residence permit requirement, not usually a university one. For 2026, most sources give €11,904 per year, or €992 a month, and a €75 visa fee. US citizens who apply for the residence permit after arrival in Germany still need proof of funds. Confirm the current amount with your German embassy before you open the account.

Is the February intake worse than September for scholarships and course choice?

For course choice, usually yes. Many Dutch programmes have no February start, and Trinity and UCC in Ireland do not run a January intake for taught programmes. VU Amsterdam warns that February starters begin with semester 2, which makes planning harder. For scholarships, check each award's own deadline on the university page, because it may not match your intake.

Which countries offer spring 2027 intakes for English-taught master's?

Germany (April 2027 summer semester), Ireland (January 2027 at selected colleges), the Netherlands (February 2027 at selected universities), Sweden (January 2027) and Finland (January 2027) all run spring intakes. As of 28 October 2026, only Germany and a few Irish colleges remain realistically open, with later Irish dates for US citizens who need no visa.
